How do I cancel my health insurance plan?

If you need to cancel your health Insurance plan the cancellation must be completed by YOU directly.

How to Cancel Your Health Insurance Plan

The health insurance plan you selected is an individual plan, which means you are the policyholder—not your employer or benefitbay®. This gives you full control over the plan, including the ability to make changes or cancel it.

If you:

  • no longer want the plan
  • leave your job
  • Switch to a new plan/carrier during National Open Enrollment 

Follow these steps to cancel your existing policy:


Step 1: Call Your Insurance Carrier

Use the phone number on the back of your insurance ID card. Ask them to:

  • Cancel your current plan
  • Stop all future payments

Choose the Correct Cancellation Date

The date your old policy should end depends on when your new policy starts:

  • If your new plan begins January 1st (e.g., through National Open Enrollment)
    → Request a cancellation date of December 31st

  • If switching outside of Open Enrollment (e.g., due to a Qualifying Life Event)
    → Request cancellation effective the last day of the month before your new coverage starts

Step 2: Get a Reference Number

Before ending the call, ask for a cancellation confirmation or call reference number and write it down. This will serve as proof in case of billing issues or if the carrier charges you after cancellation.


Step 3: Send Confirmation

  • Email a copy of your cancellation confirmation (including the reference number) to:
