How to Use Search Filters When Shopping for Plans

Filters help you narrow down the plans you see while shopping so you can focus on the options that matter most to you. You can filter by your medical providers, as well as by cost display, carrier, metal level, plan type, HSA eligibility, and network.

There are two places to filter:

  • Medical Providers — filter plans by the doctors and providers you want covered.
  • Filters — filter by cost display, carrier, metal level, plan type, HSA eligibility, and network.

Filtering by Medical Providers

Click the Medical Providers button near the top of the plan list (next to Filters) to open the Medical providers drawer.

  1. In the drawer, check the box next to each provider you want to filter on.
  2. Click Save changes to apply.
  3. To add someone who isn't listed, click Add new medical provider.

When the filter is applied, the Medical Providers button shows a count of how many providers are selected, each selected provider appears as a chip below the buttons (click the X on a chip to remove it), and the plan count updates to show how many plans match (for example, "Viewing 16 of 35 plans").

How this filter works (important): Medical Providers uses "or" logic. If you select three providers, you'll see plans that cover at least one of them — not only plans that cover all three. To confirm a specific plan covers a specific provider, check that plan's network details or verify directly with the provider.

Opening the Filters

While shopping for plans (for example, on the "Customize your medical plan" screen), click the Filters button near the top of the plan list, next to Medical Providers.

A Filters drawer slides in from the side of the screen with all available filter options. Close it at any time using the X in the top-right corner.

Applying and Clearing Filters

  • Make your selections in the drawer, then click Apply filters at the bottom to update the plan list.
  • Click Clear to remove all selected filters and start over.
  • The plan count at the top of the list (for example, "Viewing 35 plans") updates to reflect your filtered results.

Note: The available choices for some filters — such as Carriers and Networks — change based on your location, age, and household details. The options you see are specific to the plans available to you.

Filter Options

Show plan cost

Changes the time period used to display each plan's cost. This is a single-choice setting — pick the option that's easiest for you to budget around:

  • Weekly
  • Bi-Weekly
  • Semi-Monthly
  • Monthly (default)

Switching this updates the cost shown on every plan card to match the period you chose. It does not change what you pay — only how the cost is displayed.

Carriers

Filters plans down to specific insurance carriers. Check one or more carriers to see only their plans. The carriers listed depend on what's available in your area.

Metal levels

Filters plans by their metal level, which reflects how you and the plan share costs. Check one or more levels:

  • Bronze
  • Expanded bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold

For more on what each level means, see the Health Insurance 101 article on metal tiers.

Plan types

Filters by plan type (for example, HMO). The plan types shown depend on the plans available to you.

HSA Eligible

Filters plans by whether they can be paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Choose Yes to see only HSA-eligible plans, or No to see only plans that are not HSA-eligible.

Networks

Filters plans by the provider networks offered through the available carriers. The networks listed are specific to you and your location.

Tips

  • You can combine filters — for example, select a carrier and a metal level and HSA Eligible: Yes to narrow your results quickly.
  • If you filter too narrowly and see few or no plans, click Clear and apply fewer filters.
  • Filters only change which plans are displayed. They do not change your eligibility or your employer contribution.
