If I'm on Medicare, how does the reimbursement process work if I am currently paying my Part B benefits through my Social Security?

Can I be reimbursed for my Medicare payment that is coming out of my Social Security Check?

Using an ICHRA with Medicare

If you’re on Medicare (or about to enroll) and your employer moves its company-sponsored health plan to an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA), your ICHRA can reimburse you for the Medicare premiums deducted from your Social Security check.

If Your Part B Premium Comes Out of Your Social Security Check

We don’t want to disrupt the relationship between Medicare and Social Security, so you’ll just need to let the benefitbay team know this is happening.

Step 1: Send us proof.
Log in to your www.medicare.gov account and take a screenshot showing that EasyPay cannot be set up because your premiums are deducted from your Social Security.
Email the screenshot to support@benefitbay.com.

Step 2: We’ll update your account.
The benefitbay staff will mark your Part B as a reimbursement in our platform.

Step 3: You get reimbursed.
Instead of your employer deducting your Part B premiums from your paycheck to pay Medicare, they’ll reimburse you through your paycheck for what you’re already paying through Social Security, within the time frame of your ICHRA agreement with your employer.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an ICHRA, an employee who is on or eligible for Medicare must have one of the following:

  • Part A and Part B together, or
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage)

⚠️ Part B on its own does not qualify as Minimum Essential Coverage.

What’s Eligible for Reimbursement

Premiums for all of the following can be reimbursed:

  • Part A
  • Part B
  • Part C
  • Part D
  • Medigap policies

❗ Important Rule About Medical Expenses

An ICHRA can reimburse medical expenses for Medicare participants, if the plan allows it. However, medical expense reimbursement cannot be designed around what Medicare does or does not pay.

This is a very important rule to be aware of!
